ChatGPT vs a WhatsApp AI employee

Comparison 3 min

“Why pay for an AI CS employee when ChatGPT exists?” It is a fair question, and Malaysian SME owners ask it a lot.

Short answer: they do different jobs. ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant for you and your team. A WhatsApp AI employee works your business number, talking to your customers, from your knowledge, with a way back to your staff.

What ChatGPT is great at

Used well, a general AI assistant saves real time behind the scenes:

  • Drafting a promo message, FAQ answers or a reply you’re unsure how to word.
  • Translating a message between BM, English and Chinese for your own review.
  • Summarising a long supplier email or policy document.
  • Brainstorming campaign ideas or product descriptions.

For these jobs a person reads the output before a customer ever sees it. That human check is the point.

Why it isn’t a customer service hire

It isn’t on your WhatsApp number. OpenAI ended ChatGPT on WhatsApp on 15 January 2026; it stays available on its own app, web and desktop. Meta’s updated WhatsApp Business terms bar providers from offering general-purpose AI assistants as the main service on the WhatsApp Business Solution. Task-specific business use, such as AI for customer support, is still allowed. So even if you wanted “ChatGPT on WhatsApp” for customers, that is not what is on offer.

It doesn’t know your business. Out of the box it has no idea what your prices are this month, which branch opens on Sunday, or that the promo ended yesterday. Customers need answers from your facts, not the internet’s.

It has no handoff. A customer service hire needs a path to your team inside the same chat, plus a record of what was said. A personal chat window doesn’t provide that.

Copy-paste doesn’t scale. Some owners paste customer questions into ChatGPT and paste answers back. It works at five chats a day. At fifty, the customer is waiting while you copy, and you’re handling customer details in a personal tool, which deserves a careful look at your own data policies.

Use both

The sensible setup is not either/or. Use a general assistant to help write and tidy your FAQs and policies. Then put those approved answers into the AI employee that faces customers. Your thinking tool and your front-desk hire stay separate, and customers only ever see vetted information.

Where ThinkChat fits

ThinkChat is the second column. It is built to work on the channels you connect — WhatsApp (official Meta API, or QR where that path fits), and supported options such as Messenger, Telegram and website chat. It chats in English, Chinese and Malay, and can transcribe voice notes and describe images before replying. When it doesn’t know, it can say so, and your team can take over the same chat at any time.
