Claude now works inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides: what it means for small teams

On 6 October 2026, Anthropic released Claude for Google Workspace in public beta. It puts Claude in a sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, so it can read the file you have open and edit it in place. Here’s what it does, what it can’t do yet, and what a small team should check before switching it on. Based on Anthropic’s announcement and help pages, checked 8 October 2026.

What it is

A sidebar in your file. Install it once from the Google Workspace Marketplace and it appears in Docs, Sheets and Slides under Extensions > Claude > Open Claude.
It reads the open file. Claude sees the doc, sheet or deck you have open, plus whatever text, cells or slides you’ve selected.
It edits in place. Changes go straight into the file, saved under your name in version history, so you can undo them.
Paid plans only. It’s in beta on Claude’s Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, and you also need a Google account that’s allowed to install Google Workspace Marketplace apps.

There’s a second, separate piece: new Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors (also beta) that let you start in Claude itself, paste a Google file link or ask for a new Google doc, sheet or deck by name, and have Claude create or edit it from the chat. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner has to turn these connectors on first.

What it can do in each app

Docs: fix a sentence or restyle a heading without breaking the formatting around it, or suggest bigger rewrites as cards you apply or dismiss.
Sheets: write formulas, build pivot tables and charts, add tabs, and clean or join data.
Slides: build new slides from your deck’s existing layouts and themes, then flag things that overlap, run off the slide or are hard to read.

You choose how much it does alone. The default, “Ask before edits,” shows each change and waits for your OK. “Accept all edits” lets it work through a task without stopping, though it still asks before adding links, inserting images from the web or removing anyone’s access.

What it can’t do yet

Anthropic’s help page lists these beta limits:

It works only on the file it’s opened in. It can’t open, create or copy other Drive files from the sidebar.
Closing the sidebar stops the task.
Firefox isn’t supported. Use Chrome, Edge or Safari.
In Docs, it can’t read or reply to comments.
In Slides, charts it makes are images, so they don’t update when your numbers change.
One long job can run for up to six minutes before Google stops it, so big jobs need to be done in stages.

How is this different from Gemini?

Google already builds Gemini into Workspace, with a side panel in apps like Docs and Sheets. Which Gemini features you get depends on your Workspace edition. Claude’s add-on is a second option for teams who already pay for Claude and want it in the same files. Either way, the AI is moving into the place where the work already happens, instead of a separate chat window you copy and paste from.

Before you switch it on

Who installs it? If your Workspace admin blocks Marketplace apps, you’ll see “This application is not allowed by your administrator.” Only the admin can allow or install it.
What can it see? By default, only the open file. If you turn on other connectors, such as Google Drive, it can reach more, so decide that on purpose.
Where does the data go? Anthropic says content from the add-on isn’t used to train its models. On Pro and Max it falls under Claude’s consumer terms; on Team and Enterprise, under your company’s commercial terms.
Who checks the edits? Start in “Ask before edits” until you trust how it handles your files.

What this means for customer service

The same idea applies to customer chats. For many Malaysian SMEs, the “file” customers actually work in is the WhatsApp chat. An AI that works in the chat itself, answers from approved information and can hand over to a person when it should, helps cut the copying and pasting between a separate tool and the conversation.
